(Thanks to Kim Klassen, for the fab texture I used on this image)
A new series for you lovelies! I know that a lot of us have been described as “artsy”. I do not see this as a negative term. It is one that expresses what so many of us need to live on this earth. I, personally, find that life is so much more enjoyable if creativity is infused in all areas. I thought it might be fun to share what’s on the “Artsy Girl” docket now and again.
So…first up~
~Artsy Girl in the closet~
In an attempt to be fiscally responsible in these most desperate of times, I have taken some steps with la wardrobe to be resourceful in pulling “new-ish” outfits together. I’ve never been a girl to pitch out perfectly cute items simply because they’re a bit old or not “this season”. My favorite jean jacket is from 2003 and I wear it all the time. I guess I’m not in a profession where my ensemble will be critiqued with a glance from head to toe by other cohorts, but I find it a little wasteful to trade it all in for the latest and greatest. There is another way!
So…this is my gig:
I line up the stand-bys…you know, the tanks, sweaters, the staples that we all reach for (the 20% of our wardrobe we actually wear!) and then I incorporate a couple of new (or in this case, second-hand) items that speak to me. I like layers and I will sometimes surprise myself (just by standing like a dork in front of my closet mirror in various states of undress) with the combos that transpire.
Exhibit A:
The found:
Me, dork in front of my self-timer…with my fave boots that need new soles they are worn so much:
Exhibit B:
Dork shot #2, slightly out of focus..and my go-to harness boots that go with just about anything:
I think the thrill of the hunt is part of my love for second hand. Let me say that I am just as guilty as the next Anthro-loving chica to blow ridiculous money on a shirt that probably cost $.23 to make. I am really trying to go this What-d0-I-already-have-how-can-I-freshen-up-this-outfit? route. It’s fun and cheap…not how I, personally, would like to be described, but pretty a-ok for the what lurks in the closet chez MPG.
What are your wardrobe tricks and go-to pieces, lovelies? Would love to hear!

*Here is the segment I did last week on KATU on TV here in Portland about taking better family photos.*
I hope your weekend is full of pumpkin patches, non-rainy outdoor walks and wonderful family meals~

You are so dang cute! Love the boho dress!
You always look adorable! I don’t think my closet will produce anything nearly as interesting and “artsy”. Maybe you can come work in mine?
You are amazing and so so cute! Definitely have a knack for pulling things together. What can’t you do???
Such cute outfits!
I just watched your segment on TV….you were GREAT. Seriously. So very natural. You sounded really smart, looked smart, had the folks laughing…REALLY great job!
Okay, so staples. I hate to say this, but it’s jeans, a t-shirt, and Danskos. Could I be any more of a mom. I am sporting my sweet PREMIUM denim from Walmart though…they rock (snort). I don’t have access to a Target in our wee little town, nothing that fancy. The other day I thought I would really spiff things up and wore a pretty scarf with my mom uniform. Ya. It was used to wipe snotty noses, catch drool and as a teething device. Functional, yes…pretty, no.
I need you to pull me together over here!!!! You look fabulous!! xo
you are so creative! love, love, love the first outfit. i have no idea how to layer or dress myself apparently
Ah…you have given me some inspiration to dig through the closet and find something “new”
Saw your TV piece on YouTube….you were/ARE great!!!
Artsy girl! Love it! I went to an artistic retreat held at a very large local hotel and remember a woman I was sitting with at lunch say to our waitress that we were with that particular artistic group. The waitress laughed and she said “Honey, we can tell who all of you are, you all look alike!” I looked around and most of “us” were the most colorful, accented, jewelry wearing, stand out people in the room! The men present all sort of stood out too! After a while the people in business suits started to look odd to me. Thrift stores can have some of the best “new” finds for next to nothing! My sister is a very stylish gal who sometimes teases me about my Boho love, so it’s great to see the multitude of others who understand it!
you are the cutest …. love these looks!!!
totally inspired!!!
