Pursuit of the sparkly life

I’ve have this little mantra in my head lately…sometimes to really sparkle in our lives, we have to jump first. This leap might seem a little unnatural because just rolling along at our usual pace is comfortable and familiar.

I love to watch fearless women plan a jump, while they ponder the “what ifs” of their dreams and wishes. What have I read so many times online? When one woman is brave, it gives us all permission to be…even when the granter of permission might be ourselves.

My word for this year was release. So far it has been the most challenging word I’ve chosen for a new year’s focus. I actually have to remind myself out loud to let it go. When I want something (down-in-my-bones wanting it), I must do the work and then wait, grasping at the patience that so often eludes me. It’s not my plan and putting this on a sticky note on the mirror just doesn’t seem to be enough.

I’ve seen release be a struggle for many women I love. As a species, we’re planners, organizers, keepers of others’ dreams and aspirations…yet, we can also be complicated and restless. For me, the restlessness has been significant, but needs to be near a surface explosion to promote the jump required to sparkle. But this I know: when the dreams are consistent and grow like oak trees in the heart, they will not be ignored. It is possible to be who you’ve always wanted to be without changing who you’ve been for others.  Timing is overrated—sometimes you just have to jump and figure it out on the way down.

I’m a bystander in the patterns of my own behavior. It’s strange, but through journaling I see the cycles clearly. There is always a retreat. In my life it’s seasonal…September always brings big jumps, lots of plans and a ready-set-go kind of existence…Winter is a full on hiding out in my nest to ponder it all…spring is a reevaluation of the state of the union, and summer is an escape with those I love. Yet lately, I’ve made some specific decisions regarding retreat to quiet my mind enough to get clear. I have to tell you, a retreat from social media has done wonders for this girl…I am more relaxed and more present. Hallelujah!

Once I think I’ve “found me”, a new Look! Something shiny! will show up and throw a wrench in my plans. Sometimes it’s a happy wrench, but requires a reorganization of things nonetheless. The good news is, it’s never too late. I’m so thankful for that—all dreams don’t have to be grabbed in one sitting. For me, it’s been a trickle…each goal rising to the surface when I’m ready and willing to leap.

Ever wonder what is stopping you from grasping with both hands the authentic you inside? Especially if it’s a you that might be surprising to others…fearing resistance from your tribe can be an incredible roadblock. Just for fun, write down the three biggest, most important jumps that could help you sparkle….to sparkle so brilliantly that your light would shine to inspire others. Then list the top three obstacles that stand in the way of putting on the jumping shoes.

What’s the worst that could happen?

‘Hoping spring is beautiful and renewing wherever you are. The flowers are exploding here–even in the rain they bring thoughts of summer, my favorite.

MPG does Southern Cal

A wallet full of fast passes, five frozen chocolate bananas, one massive search for a size small Mickey Mouse shirt, one bandaid covered foot, a hundred iPhone pics, four sunburned shoulders, and a pair of broken sunglasses.

Ah….Disney…such a relaxing vacay. :)

We had a great time and there were several moments where PH and I looked at each other as if to say, “This might be the last time they enjoy the park with us.” There was one day for a few hours when the girls were at Disney and PH & I were scouring CA Adventure looking for the ever-present fast passes. It was strange thinking of them running from ride to ride by themselves. I think that was a highlight for them.

The only thing about the Disneyland thing is that I get a little flabbergasted (and a little sad) over the general health of the clientele. Whoa—I kept looking for defibrillators just in case someome dropped dead right there in line for Indiana Jones with a giant turkey leg in one hand & a cotton candy in the other. I don’t know what it is, but that park is a window to what is happening in our country when it comes to health. I know it’s a small sample size, but nonethless, I found myself standing in line thinking about potential programs that medical care professionals and govt. folks could dream up to combat the issue. Probably not good to obsess about it when I’m building family memories.

This….

…..is what the week was about. (the guy next to me looks like he’s barfing, but thankfully he wasn’t)

We had a great visit with our friends in Palos Verdes (beautiful!) in Orange County.

Their daughter is best buds with my littlest and when their family moved to California, we began plotting our Southern Cal adventure. I’d never been to Redondo Beach before—what a lovely spot. It would be so great to have those temperatures all year round. The ocean view from their house was really incredible—I would set up camp out there on the deck never to be an inside dweller again! ‘Hard saying goodbye, but we will see them again soon when they come up north in May. Traci (cutie with the statue) and I did a lot of catching up and it was so fantastic to see them enjoying their new Cali life, although we miss them.

The two girls are such peas in a pod.

I’d forgotten how much fun they had together, blocking everything and everybody else out. I’m pretty sure these girls will be taking their own kids to the beach together at some point.

Here’s hoping your Easter was lovely, lovely and you got some downtime to admire the cherry blossoms, beach sand or whatever else you consider enjoyable in the spring. I’m gearing up for some interviews and am very excited—I’d appreciate some prayers for my teaching future. It’s definitely time to do this.

Happy week~

Special photo shoot

I had a Day in the Life session for a man and his dog on his family’s “compound” awhile back. I have captured this dog, Bix, for over five years now and find him to be one of my favorite furry muses. The family compound is in the Columbia Gorge, which is absolutely spectacular. I recommend visiting sometime…you just can’t wrap your brain around how it came to be (kinda like the Grand Canyon…with water).

We ended up taking a small boat (Bix has a life jacket, of course) to a little sand bar in the middle of the Columbia river to let him run wild. What a gorgeous day it was—fond memories.

This is the view from the family clubhouse. Amazing, right? I love adirondack chairs any way I can  get ‘em.

On the grounds there were beautiful flowers and trees…as well as a family graveyard (!). Needless to say, this land has been in this family since the 20′s. I’ve never seen anything like it. It reminded me of a Northwest version of the Kennedy’s.

Yes, that would be a long bridge that takes you down to the boathouse. The bridge is picked up by barge in the fall and floated down the river. It’s stored in Portland so it doesn’t blow over in the heavy Gorge winds in the winter.

I love Bix’s ears flapping in the wind—he is truly in his element. This sums up that day for me in a nutshell.

I enjoyed the photo Opps as Bix’s dad gave me a tour of the whole shootin’ match. Holy smokes, such cool stuff! It was the end of summer and there were “memories of summers past” floating around the property.

It’s a large extended family who uses this land in the summer—check out the plethora ‘o towels. Wow.

Super fun to see how the other 1% lives. Beautifully, I might add.

Either you’re finishing up spring break or heading into it, I’m guessing. We begin ours at exactly 2:45 today. Yippee!!!

Spring hugs to you all~
