Hey, lovelies….you will hear from me one last time in my “message of gratitude” tomorrow, but I wanted to share my big dream with you.
It’s called “Horse Girl” (copyright pending..woohoo!).
The exhibit date of large scale canvas prints is set in October 2012 at Elida Field’s studio.
A book will be published after the exhibit which will feature horses, horse girls and my words and theirs. My Amherst Media dog book will be out within the year and I’m excited to follow it up with this project. Behold my visionary mock-up

If only we could take the soul of the Horse Girl and insert it in the hearts of preteen girls everywhere. The fearlessness, the commanding attitude and firm grip…an agenda of knowing where you want to go and taking the deliberate steps to get there appears to create the magic. Perhaps, as women, we would have fewer doubts and fears about owning our brilliance if we could hold fast to that Horse Girl heart. I believe she lives within each of us, whether we ever saddle up or not. For many, she is sleeping restlessly, waiting to ignite the heart and ride with wild abandon.

I’m shooting at Si-Ellen stable on December 4th. If you’re in the area and you ride or your daughter/niece/grandaughter ride, please email me to schedule your complimentary appt. between 3 and 5. I’ll be shooting in several other barns in Washington and Oregon throughout the next two months..after that I hope to venture to Texas, California and Idaho to have a change of “Horse Girl scenery”.
If you know you’d like to be a part of this project in some way (however small), please contact me.
Here’s to holding onto our Horse Girl Hearts.

So excited to hook you up with horse girls of East Texas when we meet in January! A friend’s daughter shows and competes in trail and cutting events, and not only does she have her own lighted arena, but there are two other amazing arenas in the Tyler, Texas area. I’m originally from Kansas City, Missouri and moved to East Texas 12 years ago and have fallen in love with the people and geography…something you definitely need to experience. We are only 90 miles from Dallas but a world apart. I even have students ride their horses to school periodically. One more thing…our rodeo is May 2012 where we even select a rodeo queen! What an amazing photo op!
Lara- this is so exciting! Your images are so beautiful and you connect with this so flawlessly… Can’t wait to read the book!
Lara, if you want to come photograph the Wild Wyoming horse women, I would be happy to hook you up with our beautiful girls!! We’ve got girls who work cattle and beautiful rodeo queens. Congratulations on your new book, can’t wait to see it!

Lara,
My daughters are “horse girls” and I would love for them to be a part of your project. We have ponies at our house in Hockinson and could also take them somewhere. Please let me know if you are interested in having us. My daughters are 10 and 6 and we’re friends of Heidi Curly if you wanted to know more about us. Our daughters ride at the same barn.
Thank you!

This sounds like such a wonderful project. Could I encourage you to include girls with special needs participating in equine therapy (hippotherapy)? I think it would really embody the theme of your book. My daughter is 9 and has Rett Syndrome. She has been participating in hippotherapy since before she was five. I really can’t begine to tell you how wonderful it is to see her up on that horse. Here are some words I wrote several years ago….. “For an hour each week, Rett Syndrome almost goes away. Some of the usual limitations seem to be carried off by the country breeze. My little girl, unable to walk, enjoys the freedom of movement provided by a beautiful four-legged creature. Her irregular breathing slows to a normal rhythm. Although she is nonverbal, her eyes gleam with unspoken joy. All smiles, she is just a five year old girl……”
So, how about coming to South Dakota to get some photographs?!
