I'm so glad I found you from a Iink Kim D. put on her Facebook page. I loved this article & found myself agreeing with you and laughing at how much I remsemble that 1981 photo of you...I remember my pony tail (have one today in fact) the striped sweater & roller skates! Then it was cool to read that you're a local girl (I'm in Beaverton). Nice to meet you! Can't wait to read more!

Sorry..pressure to keep up - somehow you have to find the balance and I guess so far we've managed. Still reading books together and culling up for movie and game night- hoPe we have that for a longer time. Eating healthy is a work in progress - we agree that baked kale cihios are right up there w wise salt and vinegar chips so I guess that's something!! Xo

As I sit watching my "little one 's" trampoline class (a filler while the diving coach is in hiatus ) I hear your cry!! I yearn for simpler times. I like the idea of unplugging every day!! But as you can see by my wireless response am guilty of the connection sin too... Sigh. We do find a reprieve from the madness by not yet subscribing to cell phones or hand held alternatives for Hannah. At 12, I'm not sure how much longer we can hold out - ironically being part of a school sports team pretty much requires at least a cell phone. Thee is a lot of

We live deep within redwood country, and for many years didn't have television, internet and cell service was unreliable unless one stood in the middle of the driveway, angled from the hill above and don't dare move if both parties could hear each other.

But two years ago I needed the internet for work, and bit the bullet. But I couldn't JUST get internet, I also had to get a satellite connection for television.

No longer do we digest the days newspapers, read books, draw, talk extensively, take those walks and my boy used to spend hours building things in the garage. We all now sit and spend more time on the Mac, laptop and droid, the blue glow of television beckons us forth and despite being within 30 feet of each other, we are disconnected.

I agree - time to consciously unplug and rediscover each other, ourselves and enjoy the world. Thank you for the prodding :)

Hey, Lara, You know my huge word of warning, which shadows your thoughts and feelings: electronic devices and social media are not that good for kids. High schoolers text about every 2-3 minutes. Twitter and facebook are pretty much an opportunity to spread gossip and rumors. They can be hugely harmful and literally used as a weapon for cyber bullying. I wouldn't take texting and social media away from my kids but parents need to monitor it. When it's family time, dinner time, study time, keep it "off and away" like at school. The speed of communication for our kids is unlike anything we experienced growing up. A text hits and 1 minute later it is spread everywhere. It puts our kids at tremendous emotion risk and causes extreme vulnerability because they are still growing up. SO, I say, watch out for social media, texting, tweeting and what it does to your kid's esteem. I think it is far more dangerous than their diet and food intake risks. Most parents don't probably even realize how much is at play for their kids. Their world is, indeed, far scarier than ours. Academically, athletically and with their communication, the pressure they will experience in high school is quite unbelievable.

Hey Lara,
Todd is a vegetarian (and has been since he was 4). Before he went to college I hired a personal nutrician/fitness coach that not only worked on his fitness routine but gave him the tools he needed to eat well on his own. Even though we ate well and I customized his diet every day, it worked well having a non-family member (and very cool guy) work with him. And...he never gets sick!

Unplugging is definitely freeing. I never realized it but my sister had never been anywhere without a "device" until last year and she thought it was SOOO amazing. I feel like you when you say "Hey, what happened when you used to just let the phone ring?" I HATE having to justify why I didn't answer my cell phone to someone. I gave up T.V. once for 6 mos! Since I watched Fat,sick, and nearly dead. we juice everyday! I have started sneaking veg into the juice for my 4 year old and he LOVES it! thanks for your recommendation of the film! Hang in there, I think being a parent we are always going to question if our choices are right, but we have to do the best we can and trust in our gut.
